Former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was released on bail by the Supreme Court on Friday, marking the end of his nearly 18-month-long incarceration. Sisodia was arrested by the CBI in February 2022 in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam.
Manish Sisodia, arrested by the CBI on February 26, 2023, and later by the Enforcement Directorate, has been granted bail in both cases. The Supreme Court, expressing frustration, ruled that Sisodia's indefinite detention while awaiting trial is unacceptable, emphasizing his right to a timely trial.
Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan emphasized that AAP leader Manish Sisodia has the right to a swift trial, stating that remanding him to a trial court would be akin to subjecting him to a game of 'snakes and ladders', where progress is unpredictable and potentially endless. They also underscored that indefinite detention without trial infringes upon his fundamental rights.
The Supreme Court emphasized that the trial court and High Court should have recognized the importance of granting bail, stating that 'bail is the rule, and jail is the exception.' The court noted that withholding bail as a form of punishment is incorrect and acknowledged that Sisodia's prolonged incarceration was unsustainable.
